Facts About Motorcycle Helmets

The first motorcycles were developed in 1885 and a lot of motorcycle bikers back then did not worry about their safety while they are driving motorcycles. The motorcycles back then lack in features, power and speed so no one really cared about the risk of having injuries and accidents while they are driving motorcycles.

As time goes by, better resources became available and automobile techniques were improved so motorcycles also improved when it comes to its feature, power and speed. Motorcycles started gaining speed and motorcycle accidents also increased. Motorcycle helmets became a necessity when driving motorcycles because of motorcycle accidents.

The very first commercial helmet was created in 1953 by a professor in the University of Southern California. They decided to make helmets for motorcycles because of the statement of Harley Davidson and Indian Motorcycles that they are going to make motorcycles for people who want more speed in their motorcycles.

Nowadays, speed is one of the main attributes of motorcycles. A lot of high-speed motorcycles are now sold in the market. Because of this fact, safety became a major concern of the motorcycle drivers. The use of helmets became very important. Motorcycle helmet is the most important safety gear when driving motorcycles. When it comes to protection, it precedes all the other safety gears. Reasons like hearing limitation and poor visibility is the reasons why a lot of riders do not wear helmets despite the risk of have serious injuries. Because of technology, these reasons are not true anymore because there are new and improved helmets that are available in the market.

The helmets of the modern era can now protect the face of the motorcycle riders from blasts, debris, bugs, forceful winds and it can protect the ears from wind noise. During an impact, the shell compresses. The helmet will disperse the force of the impact to the helmet. The pressure on the head will be greatly reduced because of the helmet. The helmets nowadays are made from carbon fiber, polycarbonate plastic, Kevlar or fiberglass.

Despite the improvement in motorcycle helmet designs and public awareness about the dangers that motorcycles may cause, a lot of motorcycle riders choose not to wear helmets if given the option. Because of this, a lot of countries stepped in to make wearing a helmet mandatory by including it in their law. They include it in their law to encourage the riders to wear helmets and prevent major injuries in case of an accident.

Safety must be the first thing to be considered and wearing a helmet while driving a motorcycle will be a big help to reduce major injuries in case of an accident.
