How To Remove Automotive Rust

By Brian Howard

It is possible for your car's paint to peel off and there may be some areas of your car which will have rust on it. Rusting is achieved when oxidation occurs on iron and any of its alloys. Due to the fact that cars are expensive, we have to take steps to make sure that they will last a bit longer. In this article, we will know how to deal with the areas affected by rust on your vehicle.

Of course, preparation is the first step. We start with sanding the affected area as well as the surrounding area using a 150-grit sand paper. it is important that the only thing remaining will be the sheet metal itself. Make sure that you even out the edges so as to not have any declination between the edges of the affected area and the surrounding metal.

And then we go on to the repair. It is basically filling in the holes or gaps left by the rust. So we need to utilize an automotive filler so as to fill in the holes or gaps on the body. After letting the filler dry, we then smooth the area by using a 120-grit sand paper in and around the filled area. Our main objective is to make sure that the area is in line with the original surface. Once it is leveled you have to use a 120-grit sandpaper to smooth it thoroughly.

And the final step of the process is to do the painting and finishing. You need to utilize some tape to be able to cover up the surrounding area which we do not want to be sprayed over. Start with spraying three light coatings of primer on the affected area. Let it dry and as soon as it dries out, that is the time you spray on the next coating. After letting it sit to dry for a couple of hours, you can then spray on at least three to four coatings of paint onto the affected area. Allow the paint to dry. Make sure that you let the paint stand out to dry for at least one whole day to make sure that the paint is truly dry.

Afterwards, you can use a microfiber cloth as well as grease in order to make the affected area achieve a high sheen. You can then wash your car and also wax it as well to make it look brand new. So those are the steps that you need to take to make your rusted car look new. Ensure that you act on the rust on your car quickly because it is easy for the rusted area to spread.
