Learn About Car Accident Injuries

By Dr. Montes

There are many types of car accident injuries. Some minor and some serious, even fatal. Whiplash is the most common, while other types of head, neck and back injuries are also very frequent. Internal injuries, broken bones and serious brain trauma may also occur in motor vehicle accidents.

More serious head injuries include concussion and traumatic brain injury. Patients with a concussion should follow any and all medical advice and report a report any change in their condition immediately. Traumatic brain injury may be far more serious and require CT or MRI scans for diagnosis. It may result in temporary or permanent brain deficiency.

Back injuries, such as slipped or herniated discs are also frequently seen as a result of a car crash. Symptoms of spinal injuries may include weakness in the arms and legs, paralysis, breathing difficulty, numbness, tingling and abnormal bowel and bladder control. Injuries causing these symptoms are considered serious and may require surgery.

Internal injuries may also be the result of motor vehicle accidents. Fractured ribs are a very common injury and may result in punctured lungs or other organs. Tearing of the spleen is another very serious internal injury common in car accidents, and can result in lengthy hospital stays.

Broken limbs, both upper and lower body are commonplace in car accidents. These injuries usually require splinting or casts. However, in some cases, especially in severe hip, knee and shoulder injuries surgery may be necessary.

Car accidents happen every day and chances are, we will all be involved in at least one sometime in our lives. Many times, there are minimal injuries, with whiplash, bumps and bruises being the most common. However, in some cases car accident injuries that are traumatic can result in lengthy hospitalizations, extensive rehabilitation or even permanent disabilities.
